See below the 6 things that you should be washing, which you probably aren’t doing as much as you should do (if at all!).

1. Wash your bath towels and bath linen

it is important to make sure your cath kidston bath linen has been washedBath towels, bath sheets, face cloths and hand towels should be washed every three to four days – and you shouldn’t share bath towels. Towels harbour dead skin cells, and oils from bodies. Add to these a dampness and a warm humid atmosphere, makes for a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, mould and mildew. Once your bath linen starts smelling musty, you have left it too late! Try to shower/bath with the window open or with a ventilation fan on to prevent build up of steam.

2. Shower curtains and bath mats need washing

You should be washing these every two weeks. If you see black mould growing then it’s gone past the time to wash. For shower curtains and bath mats made of certain plastics, you can use bleach or mould remover. Alternatively, you can put the shower curtain and bath mat into your washing machine, add some washing powder, a cup of baking soda, and 10 drops of tea tree oil (which kill mildew), and a couple of towels to act as a buffer for your washing machine, and run on a gentle cycle. Hang the shower curtain and bath mat to dry.

3. Pillowcases, bedsheets and bedlinen

balmoral bedspread fresh after a washPillowcases, bed sheets, including duvet covers should be washed every week. Once again, dead skin cells, and oils from our bodies all get absorbed by the bedding, and if not washed, can breed bacteria and act as a playfield for dust mites and other allergens. Some people manage to wash and dry their bedding quickly so it goes back on the bed in the same day, but it is a lot easier to have a spare set of bedding, which you can rotate weekly. Duvets (quilts) should be washed at least once every three months, for the same reason a above.

4. Are you washing your pillow covers and pillow protectors?

Pillow covers including pillow protectors should be washed every 2-3 weeks. As with bed sheets, oils, dead skin cells, and possibly make up, are all loved by bacteria and allergens. Unwashed pillows will have a lot of dead mites and their droppings! Ideally, you should get machine washable pillows, (most synthetic pillows are – but the label should tell you) so that you can give them a quick wash on a gentle setting every 3-4 months. You can get some feather pillows that are machine washable, but if you have some that aren’t them gently washing with warm water and allowing them to air dry should do the trick. However, always check the label first.

5. Make up brushes and pads need washing

Make up brushes should be washed. Old make up, dead skin cells and skin oils all combine to make let bacteria have a field day. Wash your brushes with warm soapy water, and then leave to thoroughly dry. Do this every 2-3 weeks so you don’t get a build up of bacteria and end up transferring them on to your skin.

6. Bath loofahs, bath sponges, and bath poofs

perfect for washing youAs with towels,  loofahs, spongers and poofs are used and then left to dry in a warm, humid environment making them susceptible to germs and bacteria. These will need regular cleaning – at least once a week. If it is a synthetic loafer, you can clean it with a little bit of chlorine or bleach and warm water. Be sure to run it under warm water until all of the chlorine/bleach has washed off. A natural fibre loofah can be washed with your regular washing.

What else do you think everyone should wash more often than they do?

The post 3 simple ways to get your bedroom ready for Christmas appeared first on HomeSpace Direct.

Christmas is not just  for kids, adults love Christmas too! Feeling happy and joyous throughout the festive period is for all.  We decorate our homes, but this tends to be mainly the living areas, lounge, dining room and sometimes external decorations. We usually give little thought to decorating the bedroom, but waking up feeling all Christmassy is a feeling second to none.

1. Fairy lights make everything “merry and bright”

Fairy lights are not just for Christmas trees and a roof. Put fairy lights along your headboard, down your curtains or even delicately over curtain rails. If you are lucky enough to have a sheltered outside area, why not add some waterproof solar powered fairy lights? No plugs near your bed or curtains? Not a problem: you can get battery powered fairy lights, meaning there is no limit to where they can go!

2. Christmas bedding is a must

I know what you are thinking: “Christmas bedding is tacky” – you might think that, but hear me out. Your bed is the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom and also the focal point. So, dressing your bed to fit your style but bringing out a festive mood is a must. You don’t need to buy a bright Christmas themed duvet cover, you can go for a subtle starry design too! Have a look at some options below:

Brushed cotton

Brushed cotton is warm and soft and just by looking at it, gives you a cosy feeling.  To give you a contemporary look you can go for the many Scandinavian style designs that are available or even something like a stag print.

Traditional Christmas designs

You can create a traditional look to your bedroom by using traditional Christmas colours like reds and greens. Mix these up with bits of gold and silver decor, like tinsel, cushions, and throws and you will have a gorgeous looking bedroom.

All out Christmas!

One way you can be totally Christmas with your bedroom by using fun Christmas bedding. Bright reds, greens and Father Christmas himself smack bang in the middle. I couldn’t think of a better way to add Christmas spirit into your bedroom!

3. Christmas candles (my favourite!)

Don’t forget that you can make your bedroom smell like Christmas too. A lovely candle with a Christmas fragrance like Frankincense and Merr or something a bit more wintery will give your bedroom a lovely aroma.

If you aren’t a fan of candles, you can get equally as good smelling wax melts! Try looking for Christmas themed scents like cinnamon, ginger and poinsetta. If you don’t know where to buy these, your local Christmas market will always have something for you!

I discovered my favourite wax melts (I don’t go anywhere else now!) at Bramhall Christmas market. You can have a look at Solu candles here!

The post 5 ways to get your home summer ready appeared first on HomeSpace Direct.

]]>
As British summer time arrives many of us are thinking what we can do to brighten our homes and gardens, after the cold, dark and miserable winter months.  Below are a few ideas, but I guess this spring is no ordinary spring. With the Corona virus spreading through the world, many of us are staying in, and the shops are shut.  This will restrict what you can do, so if you are looking for things to do during the lock down, then we’ve got some ideas for you.

If Covid-19 has you stuck in doors, it is a great opportunity to give your house a spring clean. See our blog about spring cleaning. https://www.homespacedirect.com/blog/spring-cleaning-bedroom-5-things-list/

5 quick ways to get your home summer ready.

  1. Give doors and skirting boards a quick lick of paint. Paint on woodwork tends to fade over time, and a coat of paint can really brighten up a room or hall.
  2. If you have the budget, changing your curtains to a lighter weight and brighter colour can make a huge difference not only to your mood, but how warm your room looks. Lighter weight curtains will let the sun shine through and brighten the room of a morning.
  3. Changing bedding and cushions/throws is also a good, quick and low cost way of adding summer colours to your rooms.
  4. Get planting – plant seeds and bulbs so they are ready to come up in the summer. Prune rose bushes and cut back dead wood on other trees/bushes so they flourish stronger in the summer.  If you didn’t plant bulbs in the winter, the shops will have many daffodils for you to either plant in to your garden, or straight in to a pot for the conservatory.  You can also buy plants now that will be ideal for growing in-doors over the summer.  We all know the positive effects of plants in a room – whether it be for the Oxygen they transpire, being a focal point or just making us feel better.
  5. Tidy up the garden. Pull out those winter weeds, clear the rubbish.

This cold snap seems to have gone on for a long time. It’s over 6 weeks since the really cold weather started and some parts of the world have experienced temperature drops (and snow) they have never experienced before.

Although we haven’t got to -16 degrees Celsius on our little island yet, it is still cold enough to make you want to turn the heating up to max, all day and all night.  However, with rising inflation, fuel costs, environmental effects and everything else that is going against us at the moment, we do need to find cheaper alternatives, that may help just a little bit.

* Use draught excluders – you can get the strip type ones from a DIY store  or the material “sausage” types that look decorative, are cheap and do the job.draught excluder

* Stop heat escaping through external doors – as well as draught excluders hang a thick pair of curtains over door.

* If your radiator is on an external wall then put tin foil behind the radiator. This will help reflect the heat back into your room rather than disappearing through the wall. Normal kitchen foil will do the trick.

* Make sure furniture or curtains aren’t covering your radiators

* Make sure all of your water pipes are insulated. Pipe insulation is cheap as chips and really easy to install.

* Use thick curtains for your windows. If your curtains aren’t thick, you can get extra lining for them. This will make a big difference.

* Keep doors closed (including internal doors).

* If you have high ceilings, radiator shelves will help all of the heat raising to the top where it will not be of any use to anyone.

* If you have an unused chimney, make sure the flue is closed.

* Make sure all your radiators are “bled” to ensure maximum efficiency of your heating system.

* Try and “recycle” energy. Leave the oven door open when you have finished baking, and don’t drain a hot bath. Wait till it has cooled.

* Increase the number of layers you wear, even at home. Thick socks are also good.

* Pets are natural heat radiators. Take your dog to bed and cuddle up to it.

* Keep lap rugs or sleeve fleeces in your lounge. Lovely to cuddle up to whilst watching TV.

* Make sure your loft is adequately insulated.

And finally, I have recently rediscovered the power of the hot water bottle. Perfect to keep you warm day or night, cheap, and very environmentally friendly. Get hot water bottles that have a cover. They stay warm longer and stop the initial “too hot” burn that you get from ones without a cover. You can even get heat packs now that you can warm up in a microwave – perfect if you get a little cold at work!

Christmas is not just  for kids. Adults love Christmas too and feeling happy and joyous throughout the festive period is for all.  We decorate our homes, but this tends to be mainly the living areas, lounge, dining room and sometimes external decorations.   We usually give little thought to decorating the bedroom, but waking up feeling all Christmassy is a feeling second to none.

You can decorate your bedroom with pretty fairy lights. You can place them over the headboard, along the curtains or even delicately over curtain rails. Curtain voiles are also a good way to add a bit of elegant mystique to your Christmas bedroom. You can dress your windows with them or even create  a canopy over your bed.

Your bed is the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom and also the focal point.  So, dressing your bed to fit your style but bringing out a festive mood is  a must.   You don’t have to have an all obvious Christmas theme and you have various options.

  1. To provide a contemporary festive/wintery feel to your bedroom you can get lovely bedding. Brushed cotton material is warm and soft and just by looking at it, gives you a cosy feeling.  To give you a contemporary look you can go for the many Scandinavian style designs that are available or even something like a stag print which is so fashionable these days. Silver/grey colourways also give a modern look.

  2. You can create a traditional look to your bedroom by using traditional Christmas colours like reds and greens. Mix these up with bits of gold and silver decor, like tinsel, cushions, and throws and you will have a gorgeous looking bedroom.

    More of a traditional design.
  3. Obviously Christmas. One way you can be totally Christmas with your bedroom by using fun Christmas bedding. You can have fun, grown up designs like Christmas trees, St Nicholas or even the three wise men. You can dress these sets throws and cushions to make your bedroom just that little bit more special.

Don’t forget that you can make your bedroom smell like Christmas too. A lovely candle with a Christmas fragrance like Frankincense and Merr or something a bit more wintery will give your bedroom a lovely aroma.

One of the best things I’ve seen recently is Christmas wall tapestry.  Yes, it’s a lot of work for something that you will have up for 4 weeks at the most, but oh my, it sets the room off beautifully.

The above should give you plenty of ideas to decorate a Christmas bedroom perfectly.

Valentines day will soon be upon us so what better way than to treat a loved one then creating a perfect romantic bedroom setting.
1. Let lighting set the mood. Dim your lights, or if you haven’t got a dimmer switch, use soft table lamps instead of your main lights.

2. Use candles to create a soft, romantic mood. Scented candles will also make the room fragrant, but be careful to use a romantic , relaxing scent rather than a fresh, uplifting scent. Dark Noir by Kylie Minogue is my personal romantic favourite.

3. Make the bed the focal point. Get new bedding. Duvet covers in a silky satin material or something a bit more blingy like a diamante set. For ultimate luxury, get 1000 thread count duvet covers and sheets made from 100% cotton. They will be silky soft and feel great against your skin. You can lay red rose petals on the bed, either loosely scattered or make a heart shape out of them. Romantic red is also the colour for Valentines day.Love diamante duvet cover

4. Don’t forget music. Romantic songs work the best – obviously. Use tracks that bring back memories, maybe memories of something that you did together, or a special place that you visited. You can also use tracks that describe your Valentine, or how you feel about him or her.

5. Tidy the room. A tidy, uncluttered room will be far more welcoming then a messy, overfull bedroom that still needs a clean! A fresh vase of flowers will also make your bedroom look fresh and colourful.

6. Do not disturb! Try to ensure the special night is just about you two. Make sure you are not disturbed and your focus is just on each others. If you’ve got kids, see if you can get a grandparent or a baby sitter to take them off your hands for the night. Leave your work thoughts and to do lists elsewhere.

7. Switch off all technology. You don’t want any distractions – switch off the television, the iPad, and the mobile. You can live without them for an evening.

Finally, have a night to remember.Heart

Colours for interior decorating – what do they mean?
When choosing colours, themes, and styles for your home, there are a few things you should consider.
1. Fashion – is the colour fashionable and do latest fashions and trends matter to you ?
2. Is it in keeping with the age, style and structure of the house?
3. What kind of mood are you trying to create?
Fashion
Fashionable colours are great if you want to create a modern and trendy vibe. If the on-trend colours are too strong for you, then you, then rather than painting or wall papering whole walls, with them, you can just add some soft furnishings to bring the colours in. For instance, if red is the colour of moment, then you can paint walls in a softer, neutral colour, or have wall paper on accent walls with splashes of red, and then us cushions, throw or even a floor rug in red, to contrast with the wall, making the red not too overbearing.red floor rug
The only down side to fashionable colours is that you may hate the look of your room, once the colours are out of fashion, so trendy rooms will require more regular decorating, and possibly re-furnishing.
House Style
Interior decoration should be in keeping with the “style” of the house. For instance, if you are decorating and furnishing a loft style apartment, converted from an old mill or warehouse, then wooden floors, and a clean, almost minimalist theme will be in keeping with the apartment – especially if it has exposed bricks and beams, and original windows. You can use bold pieces of furniture, and retro art always works well.  Conversely , a small country cottage would need a more “fuller” and homely feeling. Traditional furnishings like cushions, curtains and bedding in floral designs and pastel colours would look very pretty. Walls in neutral or pastel colours would look work great as well.

Colour

Finally, consider what kind of ambiance you are trying to create. Here, colour plays a huge part. You may want to experiment with colours first, or try different colours in different rooms.

Red. Red is a strong colour, and is associated with danger, love and activity. In the home, red is a great colour for rooms that you use for socialising and entertaining. It is thought to stimulate conversation and energy. You would have to be careful though, as too much red can be a bit over bearing, so bring it in to the room via soft furnishings, or vases, or focal pieces of art.
Greens and blues. Light greens and blues are colours of calmness and rest. They relate to natures colours and can be used as tranquil and relaxing colours. Blues in fact, are thought to be perfect for bedrooms, promoting comfort and sleep, which may be why blue is such a popular colour bedding. Pale greens are great for a living room, where calmness and relaxation are paramount.Canterbury floral duvet cover

Yellow – I love yellow as you can have so much fun with it. Yellow can be used in kitchens for a light, airy, and energising feel. You can have yellow kitchen units, or yellow gingham checked curtains to complement yellow walls. There are so many shades of yellow, but the paler shades can make a small room look bigger. Light reflective pale yellow paint, also has a similar effect.

Thomas the Tank Engine turns 70!

No one’s more excited than us about seven decades of Thomas! Created in 1945 by Wilbert Vere Awdry, a story about three anthropomorphic trains with chubby hairless faces titled ‘The Three Railway Engines’ was to become the legendary British franchise Thomas the Tank Engine. Let’s take a look back at the man behind the machines to find out why exactly the lovable locomotive is so popular.

Born 15th June 1911, Awdry grew up in Wiltshire by the Great Western Railway mainline. He describes as a child how the sounds of the coded whistling signals and locomotive exhausts sounded as if the trains were talking to each other: ‘There was no doubt in my mind that steam engines all had definite personalities’. After having children of his own, Awdry invented stories inspired by his childhood imaginings to entertain his son while he had the measles. After further encouragement from his wife Margaret and son Christopher, Awdry wrote his first book ‘The Three Railway Engines’ featuring Edward, Gordon, and Henry, within months 45,000 copies had been sold. By 1972 when he stopped writing, he had published 26 books in total and a further 14 have been written by his son.

The first consumer products released were a series of coloured cardboard model kits of Thomas and his 3 friends; Annie the Coach, Percy with Clarabel the Coach, Gordon the Big Engine and his Tender and James the Red Engine and his Tender. In 1984 the TV adaptation for pre-schoolers made its broadcast debut with Ringo Starr as the narrator, and was an instant success. The first two series used stories directly from the books but diverted in the third as the producers wanted more stories involving the main character, Thomas the Tank Engine. There were no brakes on the train to success as before we knew it, Thomas was on Broadway. Toy manufacturers found this incredibly lucrative as the expected cavalcade of toy train sets hit the market, especially with the introduction of Thomas in America and Japan.

In March 2008 the Thomas Land theme park opened in Drayton Manor UK featuring 17 rides themed after the shows hit characters and popular episodes. Children from around the world can now have their photos taken with life sized models of Thomas and his friends. Shortly after in 2009 the first feature length Thomas the Tank Engine film was produced in a CGI animation style, as opposed to the previous real life model technique. This opened up a world of opportunity in terms of storytelling as there were no limitations in design. Although the series has diverted from the source material, the books are still being written by Christopher Awdry and Thomas the Tank Engine is as popular as ever and growing.

Over the past 70 years he’s been a book, a TV series, a theme park, he’s even been a Beetle, now you can purchase a Thomas pretty much anything.  You can get Thomas the Tank Engine, bedding, duvet cover, blankets, stationary, and Pyjamas!
