Blackout (also known as blockout) curtains are great for filtering out light. Ideal for when the sun rises early during the summer months and for those who work night shifts. Very few curtains will block out 100% of the light, but you can get blackout curtains that will filter out varying degrees of light. The amount of light filtered depends on the material of the curtain and lining, and whether they are made from 2 pass or 3 pass material. The number of passes means how many layers of light/temperature and noise absorbing is used to make the lining.

The weave of the lining also plays a part in the amount of thermal and light insulation. Blackout and blockout curtains have a tighter weave then standard lining. You can therefore get black out curtains with varying degree blackout, from sheer curtains which will have very little light filtration to 3 pass, tightly weaved, full blackout.

Another advantage of limiting light through blackout curtains is to prevent UV light from damaging furniture and other soft furnishings in your home. We’ve all seen how light can fade material and furniture, so drawing your curtains when the sun is at it’s brightest can help reduce the lightening effect on your furnishings.

Thermal insulation is a also a feature of blackout curtains. Whilst not as efficient as thermal curtains, black out curtains will keep act as an effective barrier to cold and draughts coming in through windows and doors, as well as keeping rooms cool in the summer.

Blackout lining can be found in any colourway, including white and cream. It is a popular myth that blackout curtains and linings have to be dark in colour.
